The Linton Horners

Gawayne of Rhylstone may also have had children christened in Linton Parish. Rhylstone is a chapelry of the greater parish of Burnsall. Rhylstone parish itself includes Cracoe, which is very near to Grassington, in Linton Parish. However, of his five sons, only Ralfe appears to have survived to adulthood [73] . . Having survived to adulthood, there is no further trace of Ralph Horner in the Burnsall area.

It is possible that Gawayne Horner of Linton and Rhylstone was related to George Horner of Conistone. In fact, on the marriage of Christopher Horner to Catherine Watkinson in 1623 in Skipton, Christopher is described as ‘of Burnsall’. However, even if George Horner and Gawayne Horner are related, or even the same person, his line appears to die out in the seventeenth century.

However, there is a possibility that Ralph Horner moved to York and married Katherine Horner, sister of Robert Horner of York. If so he would have been part of a the family of Horners in York that produced Merchant Adventurers and Mayors. (See York Horners). Gawayne of Linton and Gawayne of Rhylstone are indeed the same man then the move of Ralph to York may have encouraged his great nephew Christopher to move to Ripon in the seventeenth century (See Ripon Honers).

It may be that we have three separate lines in Linton, Rhylstone and Burnsall, but it is also highly probable that these lines are ultimately connected.
