The Grindleton Horners

There may even be a connection between these Horners of Burnsall and those of Grindleton. Although now in the county of Lancashire, until 1974 Grindleton was in the County of West Yorkshire and was historically part of the Craven area. It was part of the ancient Parish of Waddington.

The first mention of Hornes or Horners in the parish of Whalley is in the accounts of Whalley Abbey. A John Horne had become a fugitive on account of slaying a John of Newton in the monastery [1] . His goods were seized by the Abbot illegally, which included, 8 ells of woollen cloth, value 15d, and 10 ells of linen cloth value 6d, as well as livestock. This John Horne appears to have been a weaver. After this fairly uncompromising start the Horners of Grindleton seem to have led an exemplary life becoming upholders of the establishment.

Leonard Horner of Grindleton Eaves may have been related to George Horner of Conistone, and Gawayne Horner of Linton [2] . It is no coincidence that their sons were named Raffe or Ralph, which seems to be a popular name amongst Horner families at this time [2b] . It is highly probable that Leonard was the son of George Horner [2a] . If so, then Leonard was named after his maternal grandfather or uncle Leonard Hebden. Whatever the connection, Leonard moves his bride from Burnsall to Grindleton by 1595, and his line continued to live in Grindleton until the nineteenth century. Leonard married Dorothy Bayne in Burnsall and it is possible that Dorothy was related to the Baynes of Thorpe, near Burnsall [3] . Dorothy’s brother Myles Bayne married Anne Horner on 25 August 1619 in Rhylstone [4] . It is possible that Anne and Leonard Horner were related.

It is not at present certain where Leonard originated from, but he may have been christened in Wensley [5] . Leonard was buried in Waddington in 1641, at a ripe old age [6] . His youngest daughter Elizabeth married George Squires in Mitton parish in 1626 [6a] . His youngest son George remained in Grindleton and had four daughters, but only three survived, Margaret, Dorothy and Jane [7] . George died in 1683 and was buried in Waddington [8] . George was a man of some status in Grindleton and the Parish of Waddington as he was a churchwarden in 1673. George also had property with at least two hearths in Grindleton in the Hearth Tax of 1672. He appears to have first brought the lands in Whittacres, Slaidburn to the Horner family in 1643 [9] .

Leonard Horner’s eldest son Ralph was also a churchwarden [10] . He had six children, but of three sons, only one son survived to adulthood, Richard Horner [11] . Ralph died in 1637 aged forty-six [12] . His only surviving son Richard would only have been six years old and may initially have been cared for by his grandfather Leonard Horner until 1641, or his uncle George. Richard may have inherited the Whittacres lands from his uncle George. Richard had ten children, five sons and fivedaughters, but only three daughters and three sons survived to adulthood, Richard, Ralph and Robert [13] . Richard was described as a yeoman and married Margaret Bannister from Slaidburn [14] . He was also a churchwarden in 1667 and 1701. In 1672, he was recorded as owning a property with 2 hearths in Grindleton. Of the surviving daughters, little else is known of Agnes and Mary, but Margaret married Robert Illingworth in her twenties [15] . Robert, the second eldest son was also a churchwarden and married Grace Tomlinson in Gisburn [16] . He then appears to move from the area. However, in 1716 Robert is mentioned in the will of a Robert Parker, gentlemen of Carlton [17] .

Richard may also have had a another son John. A Johannes Horner of Grindleton married Isabell Altham and had two children in Grindleton, Margaret and Richard in the early eighteenth century [57] . He was buried on 24 October 1729 in Grindleton [58] . This John Horner, whitesmith, and George Horner, husbandman, were trustees of the will of Thomas Altham of Grindleton on 10 Aug. 1724 [59] . This John Horner was a churchwarden 1752 [60] .George Horner, yeoman was in receipt of £60 from John Altham’s son Richard in May 1725 [61] . The connection with the Althams may have been a long one [62] . John's daughter Margaret married Hugh Baldwin, yeoman in 1717 [62a] .

Richard Horner, third surviving son of Ralph, married Isabella Baldwin, daughter of Hugh Baldwin, of Gisburn in 1703 [18a] . Isabella and Richard Horner proceeded to have a family of eight children [18] . Of their four daughters, only one, Margaret, survived [19] . Margaret Horner later married Thomas Eccles [20] . Richard was a churchwarden in 1716 and was buried in Waddington on 11 March 1743 [21] . Of Richard’s sons, little else is known of Hugo [22] . George Horner was recorded as a yeoman in 1742 [23] . He was a skinner in 1762 [24] . Richard’s son Richard Horner remained in Grindleton and married Elizabeth Bayley [25] . Elizabeth was fairly wealthy as she was the daughter of John Bayley of Dovesike near Bradford in Mitton who left her one eighth of £500 in 1751 [26] . They appear to have had only one child, Isabella in Grindleton [27] . Isabella married Christopher Altham in 1773 [28] . Richard was also a churchwarden in 1747.

George Horner of Rodmill

Richard Horner's youngest son George Horner was recorded as a yeoman in 1742. By 1742 George had bought Pillings Farm in West Bradford with Anthony Thornber and Christopher Parkinson [77] . George was a skinner and he sold a lease to Thomas Altham for £200 in 1762 [38] . George Horner married Jane Thornber in 1752 and settled in Grindleton [38a] . They had a family of five children, including four sons, Richard, George, John and Ralph [38b] . George and Jane Horner were members of Rodhill Inghamite Chapel near Grindleton, and on 9 April 1758 George was a member of the Covenant of Rodhill paying a shilling subscription [38c] . George Horner may have benefited from his father-in-law John Thornber's will in 1772 [40] . He may also have benefited from the death of his sister in law Lettice Thornber in 1794 [41] . George Horner was witness to many marriages in Waddington, notably that of Richard Isherwood in 1797 [47] . George's son Richard Horner of Grindleton married a Nancy Isherwood in Waddington in 1784 [48] . Richard Isherwood and Nancy Isherwood were siblings, children of John Isherwood of Great Mitton [49] . Richard's brother Ralph Horner was witness to this marriage. They had five children including two sons. Of the three daughters only one married in Waddington Parish [50] . One son John Horner remained in Grindleton [51] . Their eldest son George Horner moved from the area and in 1803 was working as a servant in Sawley cum Tosside [52] . Richard Horner was buried in Waddington in 1794 and his wife Nancy appears to have remarried William Slayding in 1797 [53] .  Richard’s son George Horner married Ann Brennand in 1807 [54] . At his marriage his brother John Horner was a witness [55] . George and Ann had at least four daughters, Isabella, Jane, Susannah and Ann, and one son George [55a] .

Radulphus Horner, the eldest son of Richard, married Martha Brogden in Gisburn and they had a family of four daughters and one son [29] . Richards twin daughters, Mary and Susan, died within a couple of days of each other, and the youngest daughter Alice died before she reached her third birthday [30] . Only Martha and George survived to adulthood. Martha married Anthony Brown [31] . On 2 June 1736 Ralph Horner, son of Richard, took out a mortgage of £100 to pay for a third of Swinglehurst's tenement in Grindleton, where Richards widow Isabel lived [32] . Ralphs' father Richard probably died in this year, and Isabel would have been his mother. Ralph Horner also gained property in West Bradford and Dovesike from John Bayley of Dovesike on 10 September 1751 [32a] . John Bayley of Dovesike was Ralph's younger brother Richard's father-in-law and this may mean that Richard Horner had died by this date. In 1752, Ralph Horner of Stonehill in Grindleton, yeoman was acquitted of his lands [33] .

Ralph's only surviving son George Horner married Susan Atkinson, in Giggleswick and had at least two children, George and Ann [34] . However, George left no offspring, both his children predeceasing him. George was one of the founding members of the Presbyterian Church at Holden near Gisburn in 1777 [34a] .. However, George left no offspring, all his children predeceasing him. Mr. George Horner of Whalley Abbey had a son George buried in Waddington on 25 January 1800 [35] . His daughter, Ann Horner was buried in 1792 [36] . . His daughter Margaret Horner of Duck Street Grindleton, died in 1804 and her will was proved on 26 September 1804, her goods were valued at less than £300 [56] . She left goods to Isabella and and Jane Altham [56a] . George Horner of Grindleton Gentleman and Robert Hargreaves of Grindleton yeoman were her executors. In 1783 his lands were surveyed [39] . George's lands were extensive. George Horner of Whalley Abbey gained lands in Slaidburn from Thomas Lister Parker of Browsholme in 1800 [45] . George swore an oath in the parliamentary elections of 1807 witnessing the bailiff’s returns [42] . This indicates that George was a man of some status in 1807. George owned the Stonehill estates in 1807 [43] . This George was a trustee of Waddington Hospital [44] . After George’s death the estate was inherited by his nephew Ralph Horner Brown of Rathmell [46] This estate was quite extensive.

A Richard Horner of Grindleton married Ellin Cromblehurst and had a family of seven children in Grindleton [63] . Of his children, his daughter Margaret married John Slater in 1662 [63a] . Only one son survived to marry, Leonard Horner [64] . Leonard had a property with one hearth in the 1672 Hearth tax returns. Leonard was buried in 1679 in Thornton in Lonsdale [65] .  It is highly likely that this line of Horners is closely related to the above Horners of Grindleton and may represent a line of a younger son of Leonard Horner [66] .

Ralph and George Horner

In 1672 a Ralph Horner had two properties with hearths taxed in the Lady Day taxes [67] . Radulphus marries three times firstly to Izzabel Shires, and thirdly to Alice, and has a very large family in the second half of the seventeenth century [68] . His second wife Agneta Swinglehurst, daughter of Richard Swinglehurst was very important in creating the Horners of Grindletons’ fortunes [69] .

Radulphus Horner was a churchwarden in 1664 and in 1694-5 [70] . He was buried in 1719 [71] . Of Radulphus’ five daughters, only one died in childhood, but three were named Isabella [72] . One Isabella married a Christopher Chippendale, Susanna later married William Baldwin [73] . Of the five sons, only two survived to adulthood, George and Richard [74] .

George Horner was the youngest surviving son. He married Marie Tomlinson and had a family of four, but only two daughters and a son Ralph survived [75] . George was also a churchwarden in Waddington parish in 1712-13, 1729, and 1736. He died at the ripe old age of seventy-nine in 1758 in Waddington [76] . George may have owned lands in Clitheroe by 1745 [78] . He also held the manor of Slaidburn from 1719 [79] . Of his son Radulphus, little else is known apart from the fact that he was buried in Waddington in 1801 at the ripe old age of ninety [80] .

[40] George Horner married Jane Thorneber on 10 February 1752, Clitheroe. IGI. John Thornber of Worston, yeoman, probate, 25 Jan 1772. Copyhold and leasehold lands are mentioned and the procedure for handling these is mentioned as according to the custom of the Manor of Chatburn, Worston and Pendleton The will mentions John's wife Jennet, and his daughter Lettice and also Thomas Dugdale. Thomas Hayes was mentioned as a son in law and also George Horner as a son in law; he was the husband of John's daughter Jane. Witnesses were Richard Badger and Robert Slator. Thomas Hayes and Lettice Thornber were executors. From this it appears that John Thornber of Worston had three daughters, but only Lettice and Jane are mentioned by name.

[41] Lettice Thornber, of Worston, spinster, proved 5 September 1796. Lettice had freehold and copyhold lands which went to Thomas Hayes the son of Thomas Hayes of Worston, to Jenny the widow of John Barton late of Chatburn, yeoman, and also to two of Jenny's daughters, Ann and Jennet.  Joseph son of Thomas Hayes is also mentioned. The will was made on 5 March 1796 and the witnesses were John Holden and Abraham Hoult.  A separate document shows that Thomas Hayes the elder, husbandman, and Richard Garthwaite, town clerk of Clitheroe had to swear before the Consistory Court of Chester on 1 September 1796 that various alterations to the will were made before it was signed. Thomas Hayes the elder was the sole executor. This will is easier to understand in the light of the will of John Thornber of Worston, who was Lettice's father From John's will we learned of three daughters but only Lettice and Jane were mentioned by name. Jenny might be the Jane Horner mentioned in 1772, in which case she must have outlived two husbands, George Horner and then John Barton. (I think this is a wrong solution.)Thus Lettice might have been the aunt of Thomas Hayes junior, Ann and Jennet Barton.
