The Rhylstone Horners

The Rhylstone Horners

However, the Horner line continued in Rhylstone chapelry, further down the valley [57] . A Gawayne Horner had his twin sons Henry and Christopher christened in Rhylstone parish in 1581 [58] . [59] .Of these twin sons, Henry appears to have had only one son George who died in childhood [60] . Henry would appear to have been the eldest twin. He stayed in Rhylstone parish, probably inheriting the family property, whereas the other son moved down the valley to Skipton, probably to find work or land.

At present, the connection is not clear, but a Thomas Horner was christened in Burnsall, son of Henry Horner in 1563 [65] . This Thomas appears to have been buried in Kildwick in 1585 aged twenty. This indicates that there may be a connection between these two branches of Horners. There may even be a connection with the Horners of Coverham [66] . Certainly, the Horners of Rhylstone do not seem to remain in the area [67] .

The other twin, Christopher, had two children, Magdalen and Myles [68] . After the death of his first wife Helen, Christopher Horner moved to Skipton, and married his second wife Catherine in 1623 [69] . Christopher Horner lived to a ripe old age of eighty-four and was buried in Skipton in 1665 [70] . Christopher is called ‘old Christopher Horner’ in 1665 which would probably indicates that his grandson Christopher Horner was living in Skipton at that time. Both Myles and Magdalen Horner survived to adulthood and married in Skipton. Magdalen married Edward Goodgion, probably related to the Goodgion family who were vintners and grocers in Skipton in the seventeenth century (See Googions) [71] . Myles Horner married and had a son Christopher Horner in Skipton in 1640, and a daughter Frances [72] . However, no further trace of this Christopher Horner has been found in Skipton or the parish records of the surrounding areas. He does not appear to marry or produce children. It would therefore appear that the Horner line, which had moved down the valley from Rhylstone, might have died out with Christopher Horner in Skipton in the seventeenth century, but his death is not recorded.

If Gawayne Horner of Rhylstone is the same man as George Horner of Conistone it would appear that the lands in Conistone could have been inherited by either of the Christophers, Christopher son of Henry or Christopher son of Myles Horner. There are no Horners in Skipton recorded in the assessment of 1672 which may indicate that the Horner line had either moved, or died out.

[57] Conistone and Rhylstone are chapelries in the greater parish of Burnsall . Rhylstone was the manor of the Nortons of Rhylstone who lost their land in the Rebellion of the Northern Lords in 1569.

[58] Henry and Christopher were both christened on 20 August 1581. Rhylstone Parish Registers

[59] It is highly likely that this Gawayne is the Gawayne Horner of ‘Gursinton’ (Grassington) who marries Jennett Croddayl on 19 April 1608 in Kirkby Malham. Kirkby Malham parish Register.Alternatively Henry son of Gawayne could be the man indicated by the terse entry.  The only other Horners in Kirkby Malham parish are the family of Ambrose Horner. Ambrose Horner married Margaret Brayshaw on 19 November 1627 in Kirkby Malham. Ambrose was buried on 27 January 1661, and his wife Margaret on 2 April 1656. Two children of an Ambrose Horner are recorded as being christened in Kirkby Malham. Margaret Horner christened 15 May 1653 and Thomas born on 24 April 1656 and christened on 27 April 1656. The Ambrose, who married Margaret Brayshaw, cannot be the same man who was the father of Thomas Horner. It would appear that we have a father and son both called Ambrose here. Having checked the IGI I cannot find any details as to the birth of Ambrose Horner, or his parentage. See Kirkby Malham Parish Registers. Margaret Brayshaw was christened on 16 November 1606 in Linton, IGI, so there may be family connections with Linton area.

[60] George Horner, son of Henry, was christened in December 1609 and buried in 1618. See Rhylstone Parish Registers. Henry Horner was buried in Linton in 1649. See Linton Parish Registers. Henry Horner may have married in Kirkby Malham and been described as Gawayne of Gursinton in 1608. He may also have had another son Christopher who later married Grace Knowles in Skipton. Christopher was born about 1608 and may have been a twin brother of this George Horner. Henry may have moved to York, but this is unproven.  An Edwyn Horner has a daughter Jennet buried in Linton in 1607 who may be the same man as the Edward Horner in York.

[61] See Pavers Marriage Licenses, Grace Knowles was aged 22, Christopher Horner aged 30 and described as a labourer. This Christopher was probably born about 1608 and could be the son of Christopher or Henry Horner. There is no further trace of this Christopher at the moment.

[62] Christopher Horne was christened on 24 November 1611 in Kildwick and Margaret Cryer. William Horne and Margaret Cryer married on 5 February 1589/90 and had seven children. William Horne was buried ion 19 February 1616 and his wife Marie on 26 May 1617. They were both buried in Glusburn. Kildwick Parish Registers.
