The Horners of Ripon

The will of a Thomas Horner of Ripon in 1572 mentions his two brothers Ralph and John (under twenty-one). His three sons, John, George, and Henry and his daughter Barbara are all named [120] .  His brother Ralph Horner fathered a daughter at Pateley Bridge in 1556 [121] . This may have been the same Ralph who was one of the Wakemen of Ripon in the mid 1550s and held land in Givendale from the chapter of Ripon [122] . It is possible that there may be a connection with the Horners of Scar house as in 1606 a Ralph Horner, of Skarhouse yeoman was in dispute with John Yorke over lands in Netherdale. is may be the origins of the dispute in 1625 with Clifford Earl of Cumberland. [123] .(See Horners of Scar House)

 George Horner of Sawley

Thomas’s son John probably died in 1610 [125] . Thomas’s son George Horner of Sawley had a son Robert who continued this line in Ripon [126] . Robert Horner married and had a family of four children including two sons Newark and Robert [127] . Robert ‘the elder of Ripon’ was buried in 1671 [128] . His son Newark married and had a family of five children including four sons, Ralph, Christopher, Nicholas and Robert [129] . Robert ‘of Horsefayr the younger’ also married and had a family of three including one son Ralph [130] . Robert’s son Ralph moved to Firby Hospital in Masham Parish. It is interesting that these areas were parts of the lands of Jervaulx Abbey [131] . Ralph had a large family, but only two daughters and one son, Richard, survived to adulthood [132]

George Horner of Sawley may have had a son Stephen. This Stephen had a son Thomas who survived childhood [133] . He may be the same Stephen Horner involved in the disputes of Grewelthorpe and Dallowgill Moor in 1606 [134] . A Stephen Horner was recorded in the deeds relating to one messuage and lands in Galphay Woods near Winksley in Ripon parish in 1652 leased from William and Mary Mallory [135] . These may be the same lands that a William Horner of Winksley is in dispute with a John Wright in 1651.

Henry Horner of Hampsthwaite

It is possible that Thomas of Ripon’s son Henry moved to Hampsthwaite in the early seventeenth century. Henry married Maud Shut in Hampsthwaite in 1615 and had two children christened in Hampsthwaite [136] . Henry Horner was buried in 1633 [137] . Henry’s son Richard married twice and had four children in Ripon and  five children in Hampsthwaite [138] . Three of the children were christened in Fewston Parish that may indicate links with the area [139] . Richard Horner was probably a landowner and had connections with the Thornton in Lonsdale area of Yorkshire. In 1666, there was a collection in Thornton in Lonsdale Parish for a ‘Richard Horner about Knaresborough Forest the sum of ten shillings for repairing loss by fires’ [140] . Richard Horner’s eldest son John Horner married Mary Hardesty in 1686 in Hampsthwaite [141] . They had a family of three girls and two boys, of whom only one daughter and one son survived [142] . The son Thomas Horner was a labourer [143] .

Ralph Horner of Ripon

It is possible that Thomas Horner of Ripon’s brother was the Ralph or Radulphus Horner of Ripon who had an extensive family of nine children [144] . Probably as his second wife Ralph married Barabara Dowgill, widow in 1601 in Ripon [145] . Ralph’s son William Horner married and had a family of five, of whom three sons survived Christopher, George and Simon [146] .

Christopher Horner of Winksley

Ralph’s son Christopher Horner probably moved to Winksley where he had a family of six children, including four boys, in Winksley, in the later sixteenth century [147] . His son Stephen is described as of Galphay woods when he was buried [148] . All these children seem to have survived to adulthood [149] .  Christopher’s son Edmund probably moved to York. In Holy Trinity Church Parish York, there is an Edward Horner, who has a daughter Emmott christened in 1629/30 [150] . Edward Horner had nine children, including three surviving sons, Roger, William and Christopher, christened in the parish of St Michael le Belfry, York, in the early seventeenth century [151] . Edward Horner was admitted to the freedom of the City of York in 1605 and is described as a marcator or merchant. It is highly probable that he is related to Ralph Horner, merchant of York.

Christopher’s son William Horner of Winksley and Grantley married Ann Allanson in Ripon and had a son George and two daughters [152] . George Horner of Winksley was described ‘of Middlesmoor’ and he married Mary Faldshaw of Kettlewell in Kettlewell in 1664 [153] . (See Later Conistone Horners.) George and Mary had seven children, William, Edward, Sampson, George, Sylvester Elizabeth and Anne [154] . George’s son Sylvester married and moved to Kirkby Malzeard on his first marriage, his son Francis from his third marriage survived to adulthood [155] . George’s son Sampson had only one son Stephen who married and had three sons, all of whom died in infancy [156] .  George’s son Edward son married and had one son Peter Horner born in 1708 [157] . Peter married and had a family of three children including two sons Stephen and Richard [158] . Richard moved to Littlethorpe and had a family of five children [159] . Stephen Horner married and had at least one daughter Margaret. She later appeared in the 1780s and 1790s in Addingham, her father Stephen Horner being described as a farmer of Aldborough [160]

George’s eldest son William married Alice Burdett and had a family of four children, but only one son John survived [161] . William Horner was a whitesmith and Mayor of Ripon in `1717 [162] . He married Alice Burdett in 1702 [163] . William Horner, whitesmith bought number 15 Market place in 1721 from John Ullithorne [164] . In 1723, he was alderman of Ripon and received a request for land in Winksley from William Grange of Bishopton, Winksley [165] . On his death in 1737, William left the property to his widow Elizabeth and his son Peter [166] .

Peter was an ironmonger and became Mayor of Ripon in 1774 [167] . Peter married and had a family of six children of whom only three, including an only son James [168] . In 1770, Peter Horner also bought the remainder of the property. He died in 1783 and he left the property to his wife Mary Horner. In 1794 Mary Horner, widow bought number 14 Market Place from a Richard Ullithorne [169] . The tenement adjoined her existing property. The property was occupied at the time by a William Horner who may have been related to Mary [170] . He was a spirit merchant. Mary held the property in 1800, but in 1823 on the death of a Mary Turner the property was sold to a Richard Greaves, chemist [171] .

Richard Horner of Ellington

Richard Horner of Ellington was a younger son of Ralph Horner of Ripon. A Richard Horner of Ellington in Masham Parish leased Heathen Carr and was buried at the church in Masham. His will was dated 1633 [172] .  Richard Horner married Ellin Landail in Masham, and this may be the result of a family connection between the Horners of Netherdale and Ellington. In 1587 a Lucy Landell, daughter of Thomas Langdell of Ellington married a Richard Horner of Netherdale [173] . There was a land settlement as part of the marriage and Richard appears to have added to this land by the time his father-in-law Thomas Langdell made his will in 1598 [174] . Richard Horner of Netherdale appears to have moved to Aldfield, in Ripon Parish, where he had at least one son Sampson Horner christened in Ripon parish in 1584/5 [175] . Richard’s son Sampson may have been the same Sampson who lived at Sutton Wood or Grange producing three sons, Francis, Lancelot and Christopher in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, but the family did not appear to remain in Aldfeld or Sutton Wood [176] .

Richard Horner of Ellington’s son George was born in Masham in 1622 and appears to have survived, but he did not stay in Masham Parish to marry or raise his children [177] . Richard Horner died when his son was only eleven years old, and George and his mother appear to have moved to York. Eleanor Horner, mother of Mr George Horner was buried in St Crux Parish York in 1666/7 [178] . George Horner was a mercer and was alderman in York in 1649 [179] . He may have traded in linen and been a trader. He was made a freeman of the city in 1644 and was probably born in the 1620s. Mr George Horner married Elizabeth and had a family of fifteen children [180] . Of five sons, only two survived to adulthood, John and Samuel Horner [181] . Of the ten daughters only, six survived [182] . George Horner may have married twice. His first wife Elizabeth was buried in 1668 [183] . George Horner was buried in 1696 in York, ‘an ancient and honest man’ [184] .
