Thomas Horner of Whitehouses
Thomas Horner of Church Bank
Thomas Horner of Holehouses and Bishopside

Seventh Generation - Thomas Horner of Whitehouses

Thomas Horner, the father of William Horner of Whitehouses was christened on 6 January 1675 [1] . He was the second son of James Horner and Margaret Smith of Whitehouses [2] . He joined his four-year-old brother John, and two-year-old sister Anne [3] .

By the time Thomas was nine years old he had seen his older brother John die and he had been joined by three more brothers Jacob, William and John, and a younger sister Mary [4] . Jacob, however, was buried in 1680 aged only three [5] .

John Horner of Middlesmoor

A John Horner of Middlesmoor married Esther Summersall in Pateley Bridge in 1718, who may be Thomas's brother [6] . John and Esther had at least one daughter Mary [7] . Esther may have died young and he then married Sarah Carlisle [8] . Sarah and John had at least one daughter Sarah in Bewerley [9] . She died in 1745 in Fellbeck [10] .John Horner was buried in 1777 aged 98. [11] . Another John Horner, of Low Bishopside, married Esther Hannon in 1738 [12] . They at least one son Joseph baptised in Pateley Bridge [13] .. Although John Horner of Middlesmoor above may have married three times, as yet this is highly improbable.

This line of Horners were closely connected with Linton, Grassington and High Bishopside. A Thomas Horner, who may be the same man, married Isabel Tophan in Kildwick on 16 July 1692 [14] . This Isabel Tophan was the daughter of Thomas Tophan, Senior, of Hebden and Agnes Pearte [15] . Isabel died in 1702 without appearing to have born children [16] . Thomas married Anna Yeoman as his second wife in Pateley Bridge in 1704 [17] .

Thomas Horner of Whitehouses

In these years Thomas and Anna began to have a large family of nine surviving children in Pateley Bridge including three daughters, Sarah, Mary and Margaret and three surviving sons, Thomas, George, and Jacob [18] . By 1716 Thomas had moved to White Houses, a small hamlet in High Bishopside, a mile East of Pateley Bridge. There two more sons were born, Michael and Joseph [19] . By 1724 the family had moved to Cross Lane, or Cross Lane in Pateley Bridge, where his youngest son William was born [20] .

Perhaps Thomas Horner moved to Cross Lane in search of work. His son William worked as a servant and as a weaver and it is highly probable that Thomas was also involved in these occupations. He may have had a smallholding. It was quite common for yeomen farmers to supplement their income with cloth making. The Linen and Flax industries were roaring trades in High Bishopside in the mid eighteenth century and it is probable that Thomas engaged in the domestic textile industry and been involved in the linen weaving industry.

In the same year that Thomas saw his youngest son William born, his eldest son Jacob married a Tophan, Mary Tophan in 1724 in Linton [21] . James Horner was a miner and an innkeeper in Grassington [22] . He had sufficient income to be an elector for George Fox in the election of 1741 [23] . His only son Tophan Horner was buried at the age of two, of his three daughters only two survived to adulthood [24] . James Horner was buried in 1761 [25] . In April 1740 Thomas lost his son Michael, when he was only twenty years old [26] . Four years later he lost his second son Joseph, aged nineteen [27] . Perhaps it was grief or middle age, but within three months Thomas himself passed away in 1744 [28] . Thomas's wife Anna outlived him by over thirty years and was buried in 1779 in Whitehouses aged ninety-eight [29] .

Thomas Horner of Church Bank

Thomas's second eldest son Thomas Horner, married Dorothy Tophan on 28 April 1729 in Linton [30] . Their daughter Jane was buried in March 1729 [31] .  It would appear that both Thomas and his brother James married two Tophan sisters. In fact it is highly probable that Dorothy and Mary were the daughters of Thomas Tophan of Linton, nieces of Isabella Tophan and therefore perhaps cousins to the men that they married. Dorothy Tophan did not long survive her daughter Jane and after a period of suitable mourning Thomas Horner, now of Church Bank, married Margaret Jackman as his second wife in Pateley Bridge in 1731 [32] . Thomas Horner was described as ''Thomas Horner, Junior, of High Bishopside ' in the detailed entries of his children's christenings. Thomas and Margaret had at least two sons, Thomas and John [33] ..

This Thomas Horner owned lands in Bishopside called Scaife Lands, but lived at Church Bank. His eldest son John Horner, of Bend Lane, appears to have bought lands form Roger Swire esquire, and his wife and Miss Margaret Dowgill of Cononley in 1764 for £430 [34] . By October 1764 John appears to have transferred the lands to his father Thomas Horner of Bend Lane. Thomas owned lands in High Bishopside called Low Grounds, Scaife Lands, which he gained in 1764 and transferred to his son Thomas of Bend Lane, Bishopside in 1787 [37] . Thomas Horner of Church Bank was buried in 1790 aged eighty-two, his wife Margaret having been buried in 1789 [38] . His will was proved in 1791 [39] .

Thomas's son John Horner appears to have married Mary Readshaw in Pateley Bridge and had a large family of seven children, of whom only one daughter Margaret survived [36] . It is not certain when John died, but he was certainly deceased by the time his daughter Margaret and her husband Enoch Dobby were in dispute with John's brother Thomas Horner of Bend Lane [49] .

Thomas's son Thomas of Bend Lane, Bishopside married Anne Friar on 4 May 1762 Pateley Bridge [40] . Thomas Horner held lands but was also recorded as a 'linen weaver' of Pateley Bridge. Thomas and Anne had eight children [41] . It would appear that only one son Thomas and two daughters survived childhood. Thomas Horner, of Bend Lane and Church Bank was buried on 17 November 1793 [42] . His will was proved in October 1794 [43] . He left bequests to Thomas his son, Ann his wife and his married daughters Ann wife of Robert Demaine and Mary wife of Michael Gamlin [44] . However, his wife Ann did not long survive him. She was buried on 22 December 1793, widow of Thomas Horner of Church Bank [45] .

Thomas's son Thomas married Mary Dobby in 1794, and moved from Pateley Bridge to Otley [46] . The young Thomas ‘of Otley’ was probably born in 1775 and was therefore under the age of twenty-one age in 1795, but came of age in 1796 [47] . In 1796 his father’s lands were sold for £666 [48] . These lands were probably split three ways with his sisters and their husbands. This was quite a fortune in 1796 of £222. His sister Mary and her husband Michael Gamlin had a son Thomas Horner Gamlin christened in Otley in 1795 [50] .

Thomas Horner of Holehouses and Bishopside

Another Thomas Horner had married Mary Jackman in 1721 at 9am on Easter Sunday 1721 [51] .They moved to Holehouse, a hamlet above Knott Side and to the West of Tipladies, about a mile from Pateley Bridge by July 1721. Here their eldest son John was born, soon followed a year later by Thomas [52] . Unfortunately Thomas died in infancy before he was a full year old in 1723 [53] . Their eldest son John cannot have survived as by 1727 Thomas and Mary had moved to High Bishopside where another son John was born [54] . However this son John died in 1759 at the age of twenty-two [55] . They soon had another six children, including five sons, two Jonathan's, of which only the youngest would survive,Thomas, Bernard, Joseph and one daughter Elizabeth [56]  . Thomas Horner died in Whitehouses, a mile east of Pateley bridge, in 1778 and is described as a yeoman [57] .. His wife Mary survived him, by only two years and she passed away in 1781 [58] .

His sons Joseph and Bernard survived and had large families. His son Joseph had a family of thirteen children, including five sons and eight daughters [59] . This Joseph was probably the Joseph Horner, linen weaver, recorded in 1807 as a voter in Bewerley [60] .

Thomas’s son Bernard married Anne Beckwith in Middlesmoor in 1767 [62] . Bernard probably had lands in Beamsley as he is recorded in 1807 as an elector in the 1807 poll as a linen weaver, of Fountains Earth [63] . Barnard Horner died at Skyreholme and was buried at at Pateley Bridge on June 14 1821 aged 83 described as Barnabas of Skyreholme [64] . John son of Bernard Horner of Fountains Earth appears to retire at Parcival Hall in Burnsall in 1851 aged 66 [65] . He was born in Fountains Earth, a chapelry of Pateley Bridge and does not appear to have any children [66] . John Horner had sufficient wealth to be recorded as a voter in Appletreewick but residing at Parcival Hall in 1848.
