Thomas Horner of Whitehouses

Eleventh Generation - Thomas Horner of Whitehouses

Thomas Horner, father of William Horner of Gouthwaite or Pateley Bridge, was christened on 7 April 1556 in Pateley Bridge [1] .

He was the third son of Christopher and Elizabeth Horner of Whitehouses, and joined three year old brother John [2] . His elder brother Gowin had passed away in 1554 before he was a year old [3] . By the time he was four two years old Thomas was joined by his twin sisters Margaret and Agnes [4] . They were soon followed by another three brothers, Christopher, Francis and Marmaduke, and one sister, Ellen, by the time Thomas was eleven years old [5] . Unfortunately, his father Christopher passed away in 1569 when Thomas was only thirteen years old [6] . This must have made life difficult for his mother Elizabeth who was left with seven children under seventeen to care for. It is perfectly possible that she moved in with relatives to help support her.

Life for Thomas must have been hard when his younger brother Marmaduke passed away in 1573 aged only nine [7] . Nineteen year old Thomas would have had to watch the small coffin being lowered in to the ground with his five other siblings. By this time Thomas, his mother Elizabeth, and his siblings may have moved from Bewerley to Whitehouses. This may have been to stay with his mother Elizabeth's family.

Thomas married an Agnes Lupton in 1583, aged twenty-seven [8] . This was the usual age to marry for those who were fairly well heeled. However, married bliss did not last long. Agnes and her child were buried at Pateley Bridge in October 1584, only a year after their marriage [9] . It is highly probable that she died in childbirth. Two years after this tragic event Thomas also lost his mother Elizabeth in 1586 [10] . It was probably during this time, in the mid 1580s, that Thomas's elder brother John moved from Whitehouses to Ripon [11] . Thomas may have found life extremely hard at this time.

However, five years later in 1589, Thomas found happiness again and married Barbara Danson on 15 September 1589 in Pateley Bridge [12] . They set up home in Whitehouses and had a family of at least three sons, Christopher, James and William [13] .

A year later, in 1590, Thomas's younger brother Christopher married Margaret Lowcock in Pateley Bridge [14] . Christopher had three children Henry, Barbaree and Agnes, but Henry died in 1597 [15] . He also had a son John, named in his brother Thomas's will. Christopher may have been in dispute with Miles Lawcocke for lands in Pateley Bridge in 1613 [16] . After the death of his wife Margaret, Christopher may also have married Frances Spurrett daughter of Stephen and Luce Spurrett, who was buried in Pateley Bridge in 1636 [17] .

Thomas did not live long to enjoy married bliss a second time as he was buried at Pateley Bridge in 1595 [18] . In his will, he mentioned his wife Barbara, sons James and William and two John Horners, sons of Thomas’s brothers John and Christopher [19] . Thomas Horner may have also witnessed the will of John Dowson on 8 April 1590 [20] .
