Christopher Horner of Whitehouses

Twelfth Generation - Christopher Horner of Whitehouses

Christopher Horner, father of Thomas Horner of Whitehouses may have been son of a Christopher Horner of Whitehouses, buried in 1558 [1] .

Christopher Horner married Elizabeth and they had a large family of five sons, Gowin, John, Christopher, Francis and Marmaduke, and three daughters, Margaret, Ellen and Agnes [2] . Only three of these sons reached adulthood, Gowin dying as an infant and Marmaduke when he was only nine years old [3] .

Christopher passed away in 1569 leaving his wife Elizabeth with seven children under seventeen to care for [4] .  This must have made life difficult for his wife Elizabeth who may have moved in with relatives to help support her. His widow Elizabeth may be the Horner widow buried in 1591 [5] .

Another child of Christopher’s was christened in 1555 [6] . This may have been either Bartholomew or Robert Horner. There is a Robert Horner who had a family of two children christened in Pateley Bridge in the late sixteenth century, including one son William [7] . A Bartholomew Horner married Margaret Eidsonn on 21 October 1571 in Pateley Bridge [8] . All of their six children were christened in Pateley Bridge, but Bartholomew had only one son John [9] . Bartle Horner was buried in 1592 in Pateley Bridge [10] .

Christopher of Bewerley may also have had a brother John Horner who began a family in the 1550s, married Dorothy Smith in 1552 and Margaret Rydcrofte in 1559 [11] .  This John Horner may have died in 1594 [12] .

There may be a connection with a Susanna Horner, who married a Hercules Danson in 1630 [13] . After his death Thomas’s wife Barbara remarried a George Collier at Pateley Bridge in 1616, perhaps to give a guardian to her young children [14] . Other Horners in Pateley Bridge in the sixteenth century are difficult to place [15] . A Marmaduke Horner married in Linton [16] .
