Otley Horners
John Horner of Linley
Rhylstone and Conistone Horners

The Horners of Otley

A Thomas Horner of Weston in Otley Parish made his will in 1554 and asked to be buried in Weston [148] .

He left various bequests, including three stone of wool, which indicates that he was fairly wealthy and involved in the textile trade [149] . Thomas Horner was civically minded as he left 6 shillings and 4 pence for the mending of the ‘hye way’. Thomas also left 5 pence to each of ‘my masters servants. He also left 6 pence to ‘little Henry’, and 6d. to Thomas of Denton who may have been a relation. To his sister ‘Thackwarye’ he left 6 shillings and five pence and to each of her children 6 shillings and eight pence. The residue of his estate was left to Costan Banton and Sampson Horner his brothers’ son. This same Thomas may have been the Thomas Horner recorded in the Skyrack Muster Roll for 1539 mustering with a bill and not a harness [150] .

Otley Horners

In Otley Parish registers from 1562 to 1750 there are few Horners. One John Horners of Bramley buries his wife in Otley in the mid seventeenth century [151] . Other Horners appear to marry and take their brides back to their parish of origin [152] . A William Horner also marries Dorothy Wiklif in 1598 but there appear to be no children as Dorothy is buried in the parish eleven years later [153] . An Anthony Horner ‘of Otley’ marries a Dorothy Mirfield in 1600, but he dies in 1610 [154] . A Richard Horner ‘of Deane Moor’ has a wife Elizabeth who is buried on 19 March 1664/5 in Otley, but there are no children buried in the parish [155] . One set of Horners appear to reside at Clifton. A William Horner of Clifton has three sons christened in the parish in the mid seventeenth century [156] .  His wife Grace was buried in Otley [157] . William Horner of Clifton may be the son of William Horner of Stanningley who is recorded in Calverley Parish [158] .

John Horner of Linley

A John Horner ‘of Linley, husbandman’ married Jane Brown in Otley in 1699 and was buried in Otley in 1724 [159] . He may be related to the Jonathan Horner of Otley labourer who married in Otley at the end of the seventeenth century and had eight children [160] . Two daughters and two sons died in infancy [161] . Two daughters survived to adulthood and had children [162] . Two sons survived to adulthood. Jonathan Horner and John Horner [163] .

Jonathan’s son John Horner married Lydia Taylor in 1748 and had an extensive family christened in Baildon [164] . Two Hundred acres of Baildon Township were in Bingley Manor and the rest was the manor of Otley under the jurisdiction of the Archbishop of York [165] .

John and Lydia’s son Abraham was a Maltster in Helwick and Helwick Hall, Baildon in 1822 [166] . Abraham married Mary Jowett 24 March 1788 in Leeds and they had four children [167] . Abraham is recorded in the 1841 and 1848 Electors roll as being ‘of Bingley’. In 1837 he is recorded as a maltster of Baildon Moor [168] . Their only son Peter was also recorded as an elector in 1841 and 1848. Peter was a farmer in East Morton and is recorded in the 1841 census with his wife Sarah and their three children [169] .

Rhylstone and Conistone Horners

Horners also moved from Rhylstone and Conistone to Bingley in the eighteenth century [174] . A William Horner of Bingley married Nancy Cockson of Cracoe in Burnsall in 1803 [175] . His family were farmers and appear to have originally moved from Conistone in the early eighteenth century. His grandfather Joseph Horner had sufficient income to have been registered as a voter for Morton in the 1741-2 general elections [176] . This was at a time when there was no secret ballot and a voter had to climb on a platform known as a hustings and announce to the crowd the name of the candidate for whom he was voting. This would indicate that he had a yearly income of at least forty shillings; although his vote may have belonged to the house, he was dwelling in, Burgagehold, or belonging to a leasehold or freehold of land. What is certain is that Joseph Horner would be considered to be of the local petty gentry in Bingley.

One Joseph Horner, bachelor of Bingley, married a Lydia Smith, of Keighley, in Otley in 1737 [177] . This may be the Joseph Horner who exercised his right to vote for George Fox in 1741-2.     At Lane End Cottage number 15, there is a mark H I A over the doorway and the date 1780 which may stand for John and Hannah Horner [178] . Joseph Horner of Otley married his first wife Anne Baldwin in Bolton by Bowland on 20 January 1761, which indicates that the Horners of Baildon, straddling the Otley/Bingley Parish divide, also had connections with the Forest of Bowland [179] .
