The Hornes of Woodhouse

There is a Nicholas Horne who was a witness to the will of a Nicholas Lounde of Calverley in 1540 [70] .

In 1655, a Matthew Horne or Hornes ‘of Woodhouse’ held an orchard and a barn at Leeds Woodhouse [71] . This Matthew Horne married and had three daughters in the Great Woodhouse area of Leeds [72] .

A Thomas Horne or Hornes who may be related to Matthew married twice in Leeds [73] . He is described as being of Millhill in 1632, of Tenters, and Kirkgate in 1636. His sons Thomas Metcalfe alias Horner, William, Anthony, John and Joshua survived to adulthood. His son William Horne married Elizabeth Dixon of New Chapel and was resident in Kirkgate in 1672 and paid a tax of two shillings for his hearths [74] . This perhaps indicates that these Hornes were related to the Kirkgate Horners.

William Horne ‘of Vicar Lane’ was buried in 1684 [75] . His son William Horne married and had a son James Horne [76] .  Another Thomas Horne of Kirkgate married Ann Rose of New Chapel in 1657 and had a one son Thomas Horne [77] . Ann Rose was buried in 1675 [78] .

The Hornes of Woodhouse may be related to the Horner lines. A John Horne of Quarryhill married twice and had five children. He married Margaret Jefferson of Woodhouse and Elizabeth Turner of Millhill [79] . Only two sons survived, Thomas and Richard [80] .  Thomas Horne the son also married Margaret Jefferson and had a family of five children, of whom only three daughters survived [81] . Thomas lived to a ripe old age and died in 1678, before his wife [82] .

The Horners of Beeston and Holbeck

The Horners of Beeston and Holbeck appear to have been quite wealthy. A William Horner of Holbeck had family of five in Leeds [83] . He was a clothier and was leased a farm in Holbeck by the Ingrams of Temple Newsam in 1698 [84] . His servant William Alton was buried in 1640 [85] . However, the family does not seem to continue. A Henry Horner of Holbeck who may be related had a daughter Sarah in 1651 [86] . A Sarah Horne of the Headrow was buried in 1693 [87] . A Joshua Holbeck of Holbeck a single man was buried in 1667 [88] . A James Horner of Hunslet married Hester Boynton in 1680 [89] A Joseph Horner of Holbeck , clothier was a prisoner in York gaol for non-payment of debts in 6 July 1774 [90]

A John Horner , clothier of Holbeck is recorded in 1807  election [91] .

Joseph Horner, the younger is recorded as buying out his partner John Johnson in the business of Flax and Tow Spinners at Low Fold Mill Leeds in 1842 [92] .

Henry Horner of Leeds merchant was declared Bankrupt in 1818 [93] . Henry was a cloth dresser and had been in partnership with George Askwith until 1808 [94] .
