The Kirkgate Horners

The Kirkgate Horners

Horners had been resident in Kirkgate, or Churchyard for some time in Leeds. A John Horner of Churchyard and an Isabel Horner were buried in Leeds in the late sixteenth century [52] . A John Horne was christened on 13 March 1578, the son of William Horne of Kirkgate [53] . Their descendants are difficult to trace but one branch of Horners remains in Kirkgate.

An Alexander or Alix Horner of Kirkgate married an Elizabeth Heald in Leeds in 1600 [54] . Alexander had four children; one daughter and three sons, Nicholas, Edward and Robert survived to adulthood [55] . Nicholas married and resided in Briggate [56] .

The youngest son Edward also remained in Kirkgate, married and had four sons, in Leeds in the mid seventeenth century, of whom Joseph and Robert survived [57] . Edward married twice and his second wife was Alice Fearnley from Holbeck [58] . Edward was a clothier and leased land and a farm from the Ingrams of Temple Newsam in 1653 [59] . Edward Horner was buried in 1654 at Saxton, near Tadcaster, but his burial is recorded in Leeds Parish registers [60] . His youngest surviving son Joseph moved to Millhill or Boar Lane in Leeds where he had sufficient property to be assessed at one shilling in the hearth tax of 1672 [61] . Joseph Horner ‘of Callaine’ married twice and had five children of whom only one son Joshua survived [62] .

Alexander’s eldest son Robert appears to have moved from Kirkgate to Headingley area. He marries and has seven sons, Alexander, Francis, Robert, William, Thomas, Anthony and John all of whom appear to have survived infancy [63] .  Robert may have married two or even three times. His eldest children were born before his marriage to Margaret Jackson, who died in 1646 and in 1643, Robert buries his wife Grace [64] . Robert Horner was buried in February 1651/2 [65] . His son Robert Horner married and lived in Headingley [66] . He paid one shilling in the hearth Tax returns of 1672, and was described as of Headingley cum Burley [67] . This Robert Horner is recorded in 1687 in Headingley cum Burley as a tenant of the manor of Leeds. He paid 1/- for the Tithe of the Hay in Leeds [68] . Alexander Horner lived at Great Woodhouse and had a son Joseph christened in 1670 [69] .
