The Hillhousebanks Horners

There are families of Horners living at Hillhousebanks and Woodhouse in the seventeenth century. Most of these Horners are descended from a Robert Horner of Hillhousebanks who was living in the late sixteenth century [95] .

Robert may have been the son of Isabel Horner and born in 1545, or he may have been christened in York the son of Bernard Horner, butcher [96] . Robert had three sons, of whom two survived to adulthood, Thomas, and Nicholas [97] .

Nicholas Horner

The eldest son Nicholas married twice, and had a family of eleven children [98] . He lived to the age of sixty and was buried in Leeds Parish Church [99] . Nicholas Horner was recorded as of Hillhousebanks throughout the birth of his children. His youngest surviving son John Horner of Hillhousebanks married Cicely Metcalf in Leeds [100] . On his marriage John was described as of Whitchurch Parish and Cicely of Lidgate in Leeds, but on the birth of their eldest child James in 1634 John Horner appeared to be resident in the Lidgate area of Leeds. In 1638 John and Cicely had moved to March Lane, and by 1644 were resident in Woodhouse in Leeds. John and Cicely buried two children in Leeds, but their son James and daughter Frances survived to adulthood [101] . After Cicely’s death in 1644, John Horner must have married again, as he had five more children in Leeds, including three sons, Thomas, John and William before he died in 1660 [102] . Thomas was buried in 1680 [103] . William Horner of Beeston had a child Mary in 1670 [104] . John Horner died in 1693 [105] .

Thomas Horner

Robert’s youngest son Thomas Horner of Hillhousebanks married twice and had four sons, of who two survived, William and Nicholas [106] . Thomas may be the Thomas Horner of great Woodhouse, a soldier who was buried in the Civil war in Leeds on 1 April 1644 [107] . His son Nicholas Horner married Isabel Toppin and  moved to Great Woodhouse and had a daughter Ellin [108] .

Both sons of Robert Horner, Thomas and Nicholas have sons christened named William, a year apart from each other. One of these Williams married and had a family in Hillhousebanks, but at present it is difficult to determine which William this is, William son of Nicholas, or William son of Thomas. William Horner of Hillhousebanks appears to marry three times [109] . William Horner of Hillhousebanks was buried in 1640 [110] . He has four children of whom only three sons survive, John, William and Thomas [111] . The eldest son Thomas Horner of Hillhousebanks has two sons, Benjamin and Joseph and a daughter Mary, but only Benjamin survives [112] . Thomas died and was buried in 1675/6 [113] . William Horner later married and had a daughter Mary who did not survive and a son John in the 1680s [114] .

A Bryan Horner of Hillhousebanks who may or may not be related also has three daughters christened in the early seventeenth century [115] . A Marmaduke Horner of Great Woodhouse buried his wife Margaret in 1690 [116] . A Susanna Horner of Hillhousebanks, widow, was buried in 1680-1 [117] .

Christopher Horner

A related family may be that of Christopher Horner who marries Ellen Barber in Leeds [118] . This Christopher Horner was described as of Hillhousebanks in 1646 when his servant Henry Reyner was buried [119] . This Christopher was buried on 6 March 1674/5, and Ellen was buried on 7 March 1673/4 [120] . Christopher Horne of Woodhouse married Elizabeth Horne in 1641 and they had three children in Leeds, including three sons, Thomas, Christopher and John [121] . Their son Thomas had a son Joseph in 1666 who did not live to a ripe old age [122] . Another Christopher Horne had his wife Elizabeth, of New Prison buried in 1681 [123] .

George Horner of March Lane

A George Horner of March Lane in Leeds buried his son George in 1643 [124] . George Horner may have married twice [125] . He was buried in 1687 [126] . The Horners in March Lane appear to have been resident there for some time. A Wife of a Mr Horner was buried on 12 December 1597 [127] . A George Horner, who may have been her husband was buried in 1601 and another George Horner was buried in 1636, servant to Richard Strickland of Woodhouse [128] . A Roger Horner of Hunslet had a son Jonathan christened in Leeds in 1635. A William Horner of Vicar Lane, described as a single man fathered a child with an Agnes Tennand, but died before she was born [129] . A John Horne of Vicar Lane buried an infant in 1689 [130] . An Anthony Horner of Meadowlane single man was buried in 1640 [131] .

Other Horners

Other mentions of Horners in Leeds are mainly burials [132] . Thomas Horne of Meadow Lane had a family of four in the 1660s [133] .  It is not certain how this links in with the other Horners. There are also a few marriages [134] . There is also an Abraham Horne in Horsforth, and a Widow Horner in Adel cum Eccop in 1672 [135] . Abraham Horne was ‘of bank’ and he married Ann Crabtree [136] . A John Horner of bank had a son Samuel who was buried in 1691 [137] . A John and Anne Horner settled at Horsforth in 1716 [138] .
