Horners in the Middleham Census

The Middleham and Wensley Horners

In the Census returns for Middleham there are many Horners (see below). These Middleham Horners probably moved to Redmire from a township in the parish of Wensley.

Scanning the parish registers for Wensley, very few Horners appear indicating that these Horners originated from elsewhere. Most Horners in Wensley appear to come from Leyburn [123] .

On 11 November 1726, a Christopher Horner yeoman married Hannah Coates of Wensley [124] . Christopher Horner was christened in 1685 in Wensley Parish and would have been aged about forty when he married in 1726 [125] . He was the eldest son of John Horne of Wensley [126] . But this John Horne appears to have originated elsewhere than the parish of Wensley, as there is no trace of his birth in the parish, so he probably moved there on his marriage [127] .

The only other Horners in the parish of Wensley are records of burial from 1538-1730, which indicates that these Wensleydale Horners may have originated elsewhere probably from the parish of Ripon and the Nidderdale area [128] . However, an Ann Horner, of Leyburn, was buried in Wensley parish in 1701, and is described as a Quaker. If the Horners of this area were Quakers, they will not be registered for baptism in the parish registers. The Parish of West Witton was independent from Wensleydale in the twelfth century, but the burial ground had little soil and the bedrock was too near the surface. In 1780, soil was deposited in the Churchyard of west Witton and burials commenced there. Until 1780, all burials from west Witton Parish took place in Wensley Churchyard. It is therefore possible that these Horners buried in Wensley in the late sixteenth century were parishioners of West Witton [129] .

Fingall Horners

The Horners seem to have been resident in the manor of Wensleydale at Fingall, near Leyburn since 1572, when a Radulphus Horner was recorded as a tenant of Lady Margaret Lennox in East Marforth [130] . This is probably the same Ralph Horner who is recorded as a tenant of Rookwith and East and West Mariford in 1587 [131] . Incidentally, this is very near to East Witton, which lies just below Middleham, and East Marforth may have been in East Witton Parish or Wensley Parish. The manor of Wensleydale had been given to the Lennox family in 1544 after the dissolution of the monasteries [132] . The Horners seem to have been in East Witton since the late sixteenth century as in the courts Rolls of East Witton in 1572 a Thomas Horner accused a John Fidler of taking goods worth 20/- and he was fined [133] . As High Marriforth and East Witton are close to each other it is highly likely that these two Horners were related.

East Witton Horners

In 1605 survey of rents, in Braithewaite, in the parish of East Witton, an unnamed Horner was a tenant of a Richard Ward who held a capital messuage at Braithewaite [134] . This must have been a substantial property as it was valued at £10 16s. 8d [135] . A John Horner, who may be the same man, is recorded in Carleton in the parish of Coverham in Coverdale Chase in the Lordship of Middleham. He held his lands for the duration of three lives, but it is not certain whether this term had started with John Horner or his grandfather. His lands were extensive, being valued at £2 2s 3d. [136] . Although assessed separately he also held a house, an outhouse with adjoining land in Carleton village, valued at £1 10s 2d [137] . It is highly likely that this was the same man as Carlton in Coverham is a few miles from Braithewaite Hall. In Bishopdale Township, in Aysgarth parish, another John Horner who may or may not be the same man, held a tenancy with adjoining lands valued at £5 13s [138] . In 1613, John Horner and Gawin Spence were in dispute with Leonard Spence and Christopher Loftus over rectories and granges that had previously formed part of the lands of Coverham Abbey [139] .

These Horners in West Witton and Mariford appear to have gained from the dissolution of Jervaulx and Coverham Abbeys. Coverham Abbey had been granted free warren in the demesne lands of Coverham, Caldbergh and West Scrafton in 1271. They also held one and a half carucates of land, including a mill, in Coverham. In 1563, this land had been given to Ralph Croft and his wife Ann. In 1573, Ralph Croft, Francis Bainbridge, James Jake, Oswald Metcalfe, Robert Beckwith and Jane his wife gained lands in Coverham. A Henry Horner who had interests in lands in Coverham. A John Horner who is associated with a Henry and Margaret Horner and William their son regarding fines for a third part of the moiety of the rectory of Coverham in 1599 and 1602 [139a] In 1597 and 1602, Henry Horner and others conveyed the tenements to Christopher Croft, son of Ralph Croft, and his son Thomas owned the mill in 1610 [140] . A Henry Horner in 1751-2 had an interest in the mill in Middleham [141] .

In 1628, Charles I sold these estates to various citizens of London. In 1656, the Lordship of Middleham in Kettlewell was sold to a group of tenants that became known as the trust Lords of Kettlewell [142] . A year later, in 1657 three Horners are mentioned in the will of John Dawson of Gameskill in Coverdale [143] . He refers to Christopher Horner, ‘my man’, and his godson John Horner, son of Edward Horner of Little Scrafton, and a Peter Horner of ‘Midlam’ which is probably Middleham [144] .

It is possible that the Horners of Coverdale were Quakers as in 1670 the homes of William Horner of Coverdale and Stephen Winn of Melmerby were centres of Quaker worship in the Leyburn area [145] .

Thomas Horner of Middleham

By 1676 the manor of Braithewaite in East Witton & messuages in Coverham, lately belonging to Thomas Horner of Middleham, gent & called Cote Inge were in the possession of William Walmsley of Samlesbury, Lancashire. In that year, he leased this land and Samlesbury Hall to a Richard Walmsley of Dunkenhalgh, esq [146] . This Thomas Horner may be the Mr. Horner who was mentioned in correspondence between an Edward Wood and John Pack regarding royalties, land and tolls in Middleham in 1663-4 [147] . Edward Wood paid £300 for tolls and land in the town. Thomas Horner's heir was his only daughter Elizabeth who married Robert Dalton of Thurnham. Elizabeth had two daughters Elizabeth and Dorothy. Dorothy inherited the manors at Caton and Aldcliffe in Lancashire. The elder daughter Elizabeth inherited lands in Thurnham and Coverham in Lancashire.   She married William Hoghton of Park hall.

Wensley Parish was a very large parish, which included Redmire, Bolton Castle and Middleham, until 1684 but the families of Horners that move into these areas in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries appear to have originated from other parishes. They may ultimately trace their descent to a group of Horners originating in Nidderdale.

[130] High Marriforth and Marriforth Farm probably represent this on the ordnance survey maps today. These small farms lie between Finghall and Jervaulx Abbey, and Ellingstring.

[131] A Ralph Horner and other tenants of Rookwith and East and West Mariford were in dispute with a Christopher Jackson over the Parish of Watlos and the parsonage of Watlos and the vicarage of  Thornton Steward late of Jervaulx Abbey. See PROCAT E134/30 Eliz/1ti/16.  Interestingly in 1156 Jervaulx Abbey moved to a new site near east Witton from Fors. The land was originally given by Conan, Earl of Richmond.

[132] The manor of Wensleydale included Jervaulx Abbey and the hamlets of Sklagill, Cams House, Simonstone and Cotterdale. In 1544, these lands were given to Matthew Lennox Earl of Lennox, along with Settrington and temple Newsam manors, and his grandson James I brought them to the crown when he became King in 1603. In 1573, Lennox was in conflict with his tenants over the terms of their leases. Under Margaret Lennox they paid fines worth 9-10 years rent for leases of 21 years, now they were asked to pay fines for 30 years. Richard Bessom was granted the bailiwick of Wensleydale for life and became Forester of Kettlewell, Parker of Woodhall Park and bow bearer of Wensleydale in 1604. The manor of Wensleydale was eventually held by George Cole who leased lands to the tenants in 1624 for 2,000 years and annual rents. In 1717, the manor was bought by Earl Lonsdale and in 1723 was purchased by Edward Wortley and the names of the manors were changed to High and Low Abbotside.  See Three seventeenth century surveys.

The survey was carried out by Ludovick Stewart, Duke of Lennox and Richmond. He had been granted Abbotside Common by James I. In the 1603 survey he found he was only receiving £100 rents instead of £1200. He sold the estate to John Coleby. See Wensleydale by Hartley and Pontefract p. 74. The Wards also held land in Givendale. See Craven Horners .

[135] This included a house and it’s adjoining two acres, 97 acres and two rods of meadow, and 156 acres of pasture. He paid a rental of £2 a year .

[136] This included 4 acres and 1 rod of meadow, 1 acre and 1 rod of arable land and 2 cowgate pastures. He had paid 13 shillings and four pence in fines over twenty years, in addition to a yearly rent of 6 s  8d.

[137] This included 5 acres and 3 rods of meadow and 2 cowgate pastures. He had paid £1 in fines for this property over twenty years and a yearly rent of 6s. 8d.

[138] This comprised one house, one outhouse, and twelve pasture gates. He had paid £3 4s in fines over twenty years and his annual rent was £1 1s. 4d. See Three seventeenth century surveys. Bishopdale is the next valley over from Coverham valley.
