The Redmire and Wensleydale Horners

The Horners of Redmire, near Middleham Castle were also involved in the leather trade and had operated a tannery in Redmire in the garden of Priory House in the eighteenth century [51] .

Horners were comparatively recent inhabitants in Redmire, as the name Horner, as opposed to Horne, first appears in Redmire parish documents in 1729 [52] . This is on the birth of Elisa, daughter of Leonard Horner [53] . All the Horners in the Redmire Parish Registers originate from a Leonard and a James Horner and it is highly probable that they were father and son. A Thomas Horner and a John Horner recorded in Redmire in the eighteenth century may also be related to Leo Horner [54] . I think it is highly probable that they originated from Leyburn, further up Wensleydale [55] .

Leonard Horner

These Redmire Horners appear to have been wealthy. In 1756, a Leonard Horner was recorded as a Yeoman farmer and a freeholder in the Duke of Bolton’s Court Book [56] . Leonard Horner is also recorded as a voter. in the 1741 poll book [57] . By 1759, his son John Horner was farming at Redmire [58] . Leo’s son, John Horner, also worked the tannery in Priory House. In 1758, John Horner was a Redmire juryman and in 1764 provided a horse and a cart for the statute works in Redmire [59] . He was also recorded as John Horner senior in the land tax returns of 1781 [60] . By 1782, John Horner senior had his own lands and tenanted some lands from the Duke of Bolton in Redmire [61] . John had two daughters named Dorothy and a son John christened in Redmire, but his line does not appear to have continued in Redmire [62] .

Leo’s son Christopher married Elizabeth Foster and fathered a family of five daughters and six sons in Redmire [63] . Christopher also farmed land in 1769 in Redmire and was assessed in that year [64] . By 1782, Christopher owned his own land as well as tenanting lands from the Duke of Bolton [65] . His eldest son Leonard remained in Redmire and paid for one saddled horse during the Napoleonic wars [66] . Leonard extended his land holdings by 1793 [67] . By 1816, Leonard held quite an estate [68] . Leonard married Christiana and had a family of eleven children [69] . Leonard was probably also a tanner [70] . Leonard’s eldest son Christopher married Ruth Calvert and later moved to Skipton [71] . This Christopher would appear to have held lands from the Duke of Bolton [72] . His brother William and sister Anne remained in Redmire until the 1870s [73] .

Certainly, these Horners appear to have been industrious yeoman farmers who had sufficient funds to build their own houses, and provide horses for the parish needs. This would indicate that they were respectable and worthy members of the local community at Redmire. In 1823, a William Horner still farmed at Redmire [74] . The Christopher Horner who moved to Skipton in the 1830s married into the Calvert family of Redmire who had owned land in the parish since the seventeenth century [75] . Although the connection is not proved, it would appear that Foster Horner was a member of this highly prosperous branch of Horners, who were also involved in the saddler and leather trade.

James Horner

James Horner was probably the son of Leo Horner, and his family survived [76] . A sundial dated 1743, found in the garden, bears the initials H I A that may stand for James and Anna Horner. The same initials with the date 1749 also appear over the door lintel of the Swan Inn at Redmire, which may indicate that it was originally a farmhouse, perhaps a Horner farmhouse.

James’s eldest son Matthew married Jane Trailkit and had two daughters and one son James [77] . Matthew’s brother Roger married Mary Horsefield and had nine children [78] . Roger’s son James later moved to Middleham by 1819 [79] .

Roger’s eldest son John married Elizabeth Storey and had a family of eight children [80] . In 1841 John was a Lead miner and lived in Castle Bolton [81] .  John had two sons, named Roger Horner. The eldest Roger married Ann, but is only recorded in Castle Bolton in 1851 [82] John’s youngest son Roger married Nancy and settled in castle Bolton by 1851 with his aunt Margaret Mudd [83] . This Roger’s daughter Elizabeth was a servant in the household of Christopher Fawcett in Bolton by 1861 [84] . Roger’s wife Nancy was a widow by 1871, but still farmed in castle Bolton [85] .

John’s son John Horner moved to Redmire and had a large family [86] . John’s son Isaac married and his family moved to Preston under Scar by 1841 [87] . By 1851 Isaac’s family were established in Aysgarth parish, and by 1861 Isaac was making a living as a rag and bone merchant [88] . Isaac’s son John set up his own household in Aysgarth in 1861 [89] . Isaac’s son’s William and David may also have stayed in Aysgarth [90] .

Roger and Mary Horsefield’s son Roger married Mary Fawcett and had six children [91] . His son Roger with his wife Ann was also a Lead miner [92] .

By 1901 most Horners had left Redmire, only the family of an Alice Horner remained [97] . There were many Horns. A George and Mary Horn lived in Redmire for many years [98] . A George and Elizabeth also did [99] . Christopher and Jane Horn live for many years in Redmire [100] . An Anne Horn also lived in Redmire [101] . A Thomas and Ralph Horn settled in 1861 [102] . William and Anne Horn, William died and left hi widow [103] . A Jane Horner, born Coverham  was a servant in the household of William Lambert in 1851 [104] .
