The Wards of Embsay

The Wards of Embsay

Mary Spence’s mother Ellen Ward was the daughter of Francis Ward, Miller of Barden and Agnes Spence daughter of Thomas Spence of Lamb Close, Netherdale [1] .  It would appear that there was a family connection between Ellen Ward’s mother’s family and that of her husband to be John Spence [2] . However, that was all in the future in 1756. Ellen came from a long line of agricultural workers in Barden.

Ellen’s father Frances Ward was born in 1723 the youngest son of James Ward and Elenor Edson of Barden [3] . He had three older brothers and three older sisters [4] . His father James Ward appears to have married twice, first to Anne Pagett and after her death to Elenor Edson [5] . James Ward was from Linton and christened in 1677 the son of Francis Ward of Hebden in Linton Parish [6] . James was buried in Bolton Abbey on 16 September 1762 [7] . His father Francis Ward is elusive. Francis Ward probably died in 1682, and his wife Isabel, who was certified as 'mad' was buried in 1695 [8] . James must therefore have been brought up by relatives.

Ellen Ward was born in 1756 and joined her elder siblings Mary and James [9] . When Ellen was four years old her younger sister Agnes arrived and Ellen must have been happy to play mother to the young baby [10] . She must have been over-joyed when her sister Jane joined them when she was seven [11] .

Ellen’s oldest sister Mary was the first to leave home in July 1768 when she married William Winterburn in Bolton Abbey [12] . The three other sisters would have been bridesmaids and their mother would have been heavily pregnant with their youngest brother Francis who arrived two months later in September 1768 [13] . Ellen’s youngest sister Sarah arrived in 1771 when Ellen was fifteen years old [14] .

In 1777 Ellen’s oldest brother James married Flora Watson of Calvill House Netherdale in Bolton Abbey [15] . The young six year old Sarah would have accompanied her sister Ellen and the family to this happy occasion.

Three years later Ellen had met John Spence, an agricultural labourer and later a farmer in Barden [16] .. They married in Bolton Abbey Church on 30 January 1780 [17] . . Ellen was about seven months pregnant with their first child when they married. Their eldest child James joined them in March of that year [18] . In 1781 Ellen and John and their son James would have attended the marriage of Ellen’s sister Agnes to Joseph Hargreaves [19] . Their eldest daughter Ann joined them two years later, and by 1785 John and Ellen had three children under five with the arrival of Mary [20] . In that year, 1785, Ellen and her three youngsters would have attended the marriage of her sister Jane Ward to Christopher Summersgill [21] .

John Spence must have been earning a wage to support his growing family. In the next ten years John and Ellen had another three children, John, Jane and Francis [22] . In December 1793 Ellen and her brood of five children would have attended the marriage of her youngest sister Sarah to Robert Summersgill [23] . This musty have been a very happy chrsitmas for the whole family. However, by December 1795, the youngest child Francis, named after Ellen’s father, was buried aged only six months old [24] . This must have been a difficult Christmas for the young family and the memory of the tiny coffin being lowered into the frosty ground must have stayed with them that year.

Ellen’s daughter Ann was the first to leave home and marry in 1803 [25] . Ann and her husband John Bland set up home in Addingham and started a family there [26] .

By January 1808 Ellen’s daughter Mary had met and married James Bramley of Skipton, a handloom weaver [27] . Mary was nearly seven months pregnant on the day of their wedding. Ellen’s eldest daughter Anne attended the wedding also six months pregnant with her third child. Their first child Sarah arrived on 26 March of that year [28] . Ann Bland’s third child was christened on 10 April 1808 and it is possible that she was already suckling her small daughter before Mary gave birth. Mary and James Bramley’s family continued to grow with two more children William and Elizabeth in 1811 and 1813 [29] .

On 9 May 1814 John and Ellen Spence would have attended the marriage of their son John Spence to Mary Roper in Skipton [30] . Their daughter Mary was also six months pregnant with her fourth child Martha and may have found it difficult, especially if it was a warm May [31] .

Two years later, in October 1816, John and Ellen would have attended the marriage of their youngest daughter Jane to John Holgate [32] .  However, only a month later in November 1816 Ellen Spence nee Ward was buried in Addingham, aged only sixty years old [33] .
