John
Jennings of Skipton
John
Jennings, father
of Timothy Jennings, was born in Skipton, and christened on 16 October
1687
[1]
. He was the eldest surviving son of Edmund Jennings
and Grace Cryer
[2]
. He joined his sisters Margaret aged thirteen,
Agnes, aged eight and Anne, aged four
[3]
. When he was two years old, he was joined by
his younger brother Edward
[4]
. Edward and John were probably very close to
each other. John’s father Edmund Jennings was a farmer of Stirton and Thorlby
and his family had been farming there for generations. Edmund farmed
at Thorlby from 1675 until 1683 when he moved to Thorlby
[5]
. John probably helped his father and his brothers
on the farm. In 1706 John’s eldest sister Agnes married William
Gill in Kildwick
[6]
. Their first son was born in August 1708
[7]
. John married Rebecca Cockshott
in Kildwick Parish Church, in 1708
[8]
. This may have been a shotgun marriage as Rebecca
was already four months pregnant with their first son John who was
born in June of 1708
[9]
. John was recorded as an agricultural labourer
of Silsden in 1709 and he may have moved from Stirton to Sildsen
on his marriage to Rebecca. They seem to have made a comfortable
home as their second son Joseph arrived two years later in 1710
[10]
. However, 1711 was not a joyous year as John’s
sister Ann Jennings was buried in November of that year
[11]
. She was only twenty-eight years old. Life continued
for John and Rebecca and their third son Edmund was christened in
1715
[12]
. John’s brother Edward had set up as a mason in Stirton and had
married and started a family in Skipton by 1716. He and his wife
Susannah had their first daughter Agnes in that year
[13]
. In 1719 they had their first son John. He was
their only surviving child. He may have been named after Edward’s
older brother John Jennings. John lost his father Edmund in 1721, when he appears to have
returned to Stirton from Silsden
[14]
. This may have been to inherit the smallholding.
This move may have mean that John and Rebecca could increase their
family as they had more income to support their family. Rebecca
and John appear to have had no more children for seven years, after
the birth of Edmund in 1715. After the move to Stirton they had
their last two sons, Timothy and Joseph and their only daughter
Hannah
[15]
. John’s mother Grace may also have been on hand
to help care for the young children and certainly lived to see the
birth of her grandchildren Hannah and Joseph. However, Grace Jennings
nee Cryer passed away and was buried on 3 May 1725
[16]
. John Jennings was buried in Skipton
in 1745 aged only forty years old
[20]
. His wife Rebecca only outlived him by twelve
years
[21]
